The Referendum Wisdom of Sir Manuel
posted (March 7, 2019)
We spoke to former Prime Minister Sir Manuel Esquivel on Tuesday about his position on the ICJ - which is an emphatic yes. He says it's the simplest choice Belizeans will ever have to settle the centuries old dispute, but is he concerned about the significant "no" sentiment that's out there?

He said his party, the UDP is pushing its supporters for a yes, but they are not the bloc of voters that matter most in this referendum:...

Sir Manuel Esquivel (Rt. Hon) - Two Term Prime Minister
"I think certainly on the UDP side, as far as I can tell, it's pretty much a yes."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"However, who knows what will happen on election day? But there is a strong "No" sentiment out there, Sir Manuel."

Sir Manuel Esquivel (Rt. Hon) - Two Term Prime Minister
"Yes, but who are they. There is the crowd, the crowd and the crowd."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Right, and the crowd that comes with the crowd that goes out there on election day."

Sir Manuel Esquivel (Rt. Hon) - Two Term Prime Minister
"Not necessarily."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Which crowd is the most important to you?"

Sir Manuel Esquivel (Rt. Hon) - Two Term Prime Minister
"I think the crowd that will not come out on election day are the ones who "I don't know" - they won't vote. They only go out to vote because they get paid. This has nothing to do with referendum or nothing."
