The Cocaine Cargo in Ranchito
posted (March 8, 2019)

59 year-old courier service driver Henry Menzies, and 38 year-old Melvin Cal, a cargo agent for a local airline company, are out on Supreme Court bail after police allegedly caught them on Wednesday with over 3 kilos of cocaine.

At around 3:24 p.m. on Wednesday, they visited the Ranchito Municipal Airstrip, and they reportedly spotted Cal handing over a bag to Menzies, who headed toward a white taxi van. They said that they intercepted Menzies before he reached the van, and they identified themselves to him as police. They searched the bag and found 3 folded short pants. When they unfolded the pants, they found that each item of clothing had a square parcel wrapped in transparent plastic. The cops then confiscated the items, which they suspected to be cocaine. The parcels had a combined weight of 3.146 kilograms about six and a half pounds.

Both men were arrested and charged with drug trafficking, and they were arraigned in the Corozal Magistrate’s Court. They were remanded into custody until May 8th.

Their attorney, Kathleen Lewis, made a bail application today before Justice Francis Cumberbatch, and after hearing from Senior Crown Counsel Christelle Wilson, the judge granted them bail of $8,000.

But there’s another side to the story.  Menzies’s employer and his family put out a statement on Facebook today.  It says, quote, “We would like to clear all false allegations made against Mr. Henry Menzies. On Tuesday March 5th our office and several of our drivers received phone calls from a long-standing client who requested that we pick up a package at the Corozal airport and deliver to his wife in Corozal….Unfortunately, some illicit substances was found in the back pack. Even though he explained to the officers that he was delivering the package at the request of his client for his wife he Mr. Menzies was then detained for questioning and then later falsely arrested and charged.

Mr. Menzies has managed the family business for over 40 years providing first class service to his clients….It pains us that that he has been wrongly accused, used as a scapegoat, and fallen victim of incompetent investigation.
