New Regs For Styrofoam and Plastics Ready For Rapid Review
posted (March 8, 2019)

And while Styrofoam is always environmentally questionable - the type produced at Belize Polystructure can be re-cycled. They also re-cycle foam packaging from major importers such as Courts.

And that’s increasingly required under new environmental regulations - which is bringing sweeping reform to the use of plastics in Belize.

The Draft Environmental Protection Regulations have been published and you have a few days to give your input via email. This regulation concerns the pollution from plastics. In July 2018 cabinet approved the “Implementation Strategy and Action Plan to Phase-out Single-Use Plastics and Styrofoam Utensils, Transition to Green Products, and Promote Recyclingâ€￾. That pretty much means you won’t be able to purchase any more Styrofoam utensils at the store. This phase out plan should take effect on April 22nd 2019.  In a release sent out today it states “A priority outcome of this Implementation Strategy and Action Plan is the regulatory strengthening to enable the restriction of importation, manufacture and sale of single-use plastics and prohibit specific targeted single-use plastics through a permitting and licencing regime under the Environmental Protection Act.â€￾

Now a copy of the regulation is on the DOE website doe.gov.bz and The DOE requests that ALL comments on the Draft Regulation be submitted in writing using the Plastics Regulations Comment Sheet, also available on the DOE website. Â All written comments are to be submitted to the DOE via email at lawunit@environment.gov.bz no later than Thursday, 21st March 2019.
