UDP Will Allow A Vote of Conscience
posted (March 13, 2019)
We also asked Finnegan about what kind of work his party will be putting into the referendum. He said that they will have polling agents at every polling station, and counting agents in the room - but he conceded that supporters will be allowed to vote their conscience:..

Hon. Michael Finnegan
"There will be 2 counters for every polling area and we will have that. We will be out there, not like general election, but there will be visibility of the United Democratic Party and I will repeat, not like general election, but we will make sure that people come out to vote and we are asking the people to support the party's position which is to say YES to the ICJ. But if you want to say NO and you strongly believe that your vote should be a NO, we in the UDP and in the Mesopotamia division will not be vex with you for that and will get upset with you for that. This referendum is a serious matter and people will go the way they want to go and we must respect that."

"It's not an article of faith that if you are UDP, you must vote YES?"

Hon. Michael Finnegan
"I want to believe that those people who support Shyne and support myself the area representative that is exiting, I want to believe that they will go along with our position. But if they want to do otherwise, you have to respect that."

Of course, the question of whether the referendum will be held on April 10th is now on the table - as an urgent injunction application by the PUP to put off the referendum will be heard tomorrow morning at 10:00 am before the Chief Justice.
