House of Horrors?
posted (March 18, 2019)

It didn't make it into a very packed newscast on Friday night, but at the start of Friday's House Meeting, the Speaker of the House had a cautionary tale about security of the parliament.  We've always taken it for granted but she said the other day - they had a scare which has forced them to implement new procedures:

Hon. Laura Longsworth - Speaker of the House

"We are moving ahead with formalizing a security policy for the National Assembly. It has been a source of concern that we are not prepared to act decisively in the event of an emergency. Recently, while in the building, I was confronted by a stark reality of an emergency situation where we were asked to leave the building immediately by police officers while they investigated a suspicious car parked in then vicinity of the building. The media has also been asked to wear identification badges during House Meetings. I want to thank the media for their cooperation. They should know that we are extremely sensitive to the important role that the media plays in promoting democracy and by keeping our citizens informed. And, of course, by informing our citizens, it allows them to participate in parliamentary matters. So, as we move ahead to finalize a communication plan for parliament, we will engage you the media in discussions that will help us to develop a plan that is inclusive, dynamic and relevant."

The new press passes - only policy  will go into effect at the next house meeting, which is the Budget Debate on March 25th and 26th.
