Scrapping Plastics Begins With You
posted (March 20, 2019)

But, while the ban is the regulatory and legislative element - to make this work, what is really required is behavioral modification across the society.  OCEANA’s Janelle Chanona - who is part of the plastics task force - discussed this:…

Janelle Chanona - VP, Oceana Belize
"Overall, when you look at the passage of any law, the law is one thing. What it will really come down to is the behavior change because we all have to accept that we cannot have enforcement 24/7, we cannot have big brother looking over your shoulder. It really has to be something that the community buys in, where the people of Belize reconcile and recognize that behavior change needs to happen and that we all need to be changing how we do things, how we see plastic as a problem, how we see it impacting our health, how we see it impacting our economy, how we see it impacting our environment. So, that is really the way that we supported in this is being a member of the communications and public awareness working group because that is where we see that, outside of what the law says, we want there to be an internalization, a localization, a recognition by the people of Belize that this is something that needs to change."

Again, the ban on importation of these products is the first phase of the plastics ban.
