Barrerra Gave Cops A Hard Time
posted (March 20, 2019)

19 year-old George Barrera, a labourer of Curl Thompson Street, is out on bail tonight after he was taken to court for allegedly lying to police about his real name, and then escaping from custody.

Barrera was arraigned before Magistrate Emerson Banner on the offenses of resisting arrest, escaping from lawful custody, assaulting a police officer and committing a mischievous act. Police say that on Monday, he was behaving disorderly, and so, he was taken to the Queen Street Police Station. When they asked him for his identity, he allegedly told them that his name was Jose Pablo. He also managed to escape from the police station. He pleaded not guilty to the charges, and he was offered bail of $1,000.

But, before he could meet bail, police took him back to the station for an additional charge of damage to property. The cops say that he broke the back glass door to the station.

When he was arraigned today before the Magistrate, he told the court that he ran into the door and shattered it after he allegedly overheard one officer telling another to take him to the back of the station and finish him off.

Magistrate Banner ordered him to pay a fine of $500 for the damage to door. He gave Barrera until April 30 to pay. If he defaults on payment he will serve 6 months. He also ordered Barrera to pay compensation to the Government of Belize in the sum of $787.50, cost of the door. He ordered Barrera to pay $200 of the compensation money forthwith and the balance by April 30.
