One Week of No Classes At Holy Angels
posted (March 29, 2019)

There were no classes again today at Holy Angels Primary School in Pomona. Instead the teachers and parents stood by the roadside most of the day asking for donations. Viewers will remember that the classrooms at this school are in deplorable conditions - there are rats, bats, termites and holes in the floorboards. We passed them on the road today and found out how it was going. The teachers say they are doing their part.

"What we're doing is that we are trying to do our part to try to assist in helping to repair our school. As you all know, it has been all over the media that we are in a very bad situation at hand that Ministry of Health has close down all of our buildings. So what we are doing currently as a staff we are trying to do our part in trying to bring in the funds - we can't sit around and wait for anybody to do it for us. So we decided to come out today and trying to bring the funds in to assist in getting materials needed and much funds needed to do what we have to do to get our building going."

Courtney Weatherburne

"How is it going today? Are people assisting as they pass by?"

Rose Avila

"So far the response has been great, honestly we really appreciate the people have been passing by, they tell us we saw you guys on TV, we heard about the situation and they are more than willing to help people who are not even from here; people who are foreigners, those who get to see what is going on, they assist us from the heart and I really appreciate - we appreciate it very much."

Courtney Weatherburne

"You guys have been out here from what time this morning, early morning?"

Rose Avila

"We've been out here since morning, yes ma'am."

Courtney Weatherburne

"There are no classes today."

Rose Avila

"Actually no, the parents took the stand, we decided to keep the kids home and so since we don't have that, we also use that opportunity to come out here and do this because if we had the students we would have to be inside the classroom teaching but you know, we don't sit around and because students are not here - we just decide to sit in classroom and have fun, no. We decide to come out because we know this is for the good of everybody involved.â€￾

Classes resume on Monday. The teachers will organize a number of other fundraisers including a Pre- Easter fest. The Minister of Education has said he will assist but noted that it is a failure of the school management to properly maintain the school. The management says that 70% of the students parents have not paid their fees.
