Senator's Scattershot Allegation Shows Somebody's Lying In Senate Chamber
posted (March 29, 2019)

Yesterday in the Senate, Labour Senator Elena Smith caused a commotion when she threw a scattershot  allegation that has all sides "clearing shoal" tonight.  .  She was talking about cyberbullying and referred to the case where a teacher from Orange Walk was forced to resign after nude pictures of her were circulated.  She lamented that one of her own senate colleagues was accused of "sharing the pictures with the public and making rude comments about that teacher."

So, who was she referring to?  Well, she didn't get specific, and tonight all 14 senators are saying "it wasn't me!"

First, the president of the senate Lee Mark Chang and the six UDP Senators sent out a release saying, quote, "Whilst Senator Smith may have cast a wide net, in indicting "one of [her] colleagues"; we wish to make it abundantly clear that those comments did not refer to any of the undersigned."

On the subject of cyber-bullying, their statement says, quote "We decry this pandemic of abuse and victimization and regret that such intolerable behavior has become far too commonplace in our society." End quote.

And then, a few minutes later, we got a joint statement from PUP Senator Valerie Woods. Her statement bears the names of   all the other Senators, three for the PUP and four social partners.  It  says, quote, "It is unfortunate that the senators appointed by the Government chose to address this publicly in a partisan manner. All 13 senators condemn the "pandemic of abuse and victimization of women" and a joint statement of the whole Senate on this very important issue would have been in the best interest of the public and the women of Belize."

So, now that all 14 members of the Senate have denied doing any such thing, who did do it?  According to Senator Elena, someone did, and that means, someone who signed the statement of disclaimer is lying, an interesting predicament for an honorable chamber.
