Vascianne Says No Play on Uti Possidetis
posted (April 2, 2019)
And the Belize Bar Association's International Law expert Stephen Vascianne had also touched on this principle of international law called "uti possidetis."

He did it in his 42 page legal opinion and he went over it when he addressed a public forum held by the bar association. That was two weeks ago - and he spoke to the gather via Skype from Jamaica. Here's what he said:...

Stephen Vascianne, International Law Expert
"You can have a treaty which has a provision that fails and yet still you retained boundary arrangements that are set out in the treaty. That provision that - that statement that I just made comes from an ICJ case between Libya and Chad where a similar situation. A treaty was in place that says here is the boundary the treaty fell away and the court says the boundary remains in place. Does the boundary in the treaty remained in place? and I say yes, based on Libya and Chad."

We'll keep reporting on ICJ in the days leading up to the referendum.
