Counsel For GOB Says It's Only a Postponement
posted (April 3, 2019)

On the other side, lead Attorney for the Government, Lisa Shoman said the PUP has only successfully managed to get the referendum postponed, and nothing else as yet.

Speaking on the judge's ruling, she also asserted that the PUP had no success with their main legal arguments. Here's how she explained why:

Lisa Shoman, SC - Attorney For GOB
"I'm a bit disappointed. Of course, I want first of all to emphasize that we succeeded on the first ground. That is the Chief Justice said that there is no serious issue to be tried, when it comes to the question of the executive entering into the treaty, when it comes to the matter of it's going to the National Assembly, and of course, that there is nothing that they succeeded on in this fear that somehow, there will be any change by the ICJ. The Chief Justice called that premature. He said that that is not a serious issue to be tried at this time. So, that the only point on which the claimants have succeeded, and on which the injunction has been granted, is the question of whether the writs are valid. So, that is going to be a rather technical view of looking at the writs to see if they square up, and they're in order. And if the court says that they square up, and they're in order, we are having a referendum. The only issue is of course when that referendum will be. Now understand, what the claimants may have succeeded in is getting a postponement but not more than that."
