PUP Leader Says Not Time to Gloat
posted (April 3, 2019)

And while the UDP Leader is firm about Shoman's leadership of the case, her party leader Briceño was vague about the implications for her.    But, he was more forthcoming about the favorable outcome of this injunction hearing.

He said that he will not gloat:

John Briceño - Leader of the Opposition
"Certainly, I don't think it is time to gloat. We're standing up for the Belizean people. But I want to make 3 basic points. 1 is about legality, certainty, and respect. Legality, we've been saying from the beginning that this whole process that the UDP has taken is illegal, Secondly, there must be certainty in what we are doing. This is something that can have a direct effect or impact on the future of this country. And we have been very clear that we are always going to stand up for Belize. And thirdly, about respect, the Prime Minister and the UDP Government need to understand that they need to respect us in the Opposition, when we're saying that you must come to the House, and have an open and full debate. What is it that the Prime Minister is afraid of? Is he afraid that he would not be able to control his representatives?"

This evening, the PUP sent out a press release which says, quote, "The People's United Party is pleased to obtain a victory for the people of Belize." End quote.

Their statement ends by criticizing the Prime Minister. It says, quote, "The PUP condemns the Prime Minister, who said he would respect the ruling of the Court, is once again attacking the Judiciary because he has lost yet another case." End quote.

Well, we note that THE CHIEF ELECTIONS Officer has sent out an email telling all public officers, "based on legal advice, please proceed with all plans unless directed otherwise."  She adds, quote, "we need to be fully prepared in the event that the court informs that we proceed on April 10th."

So while that's the end of our coverage for tonight - what does all this PUDP jostling, again in court mean to you the voter?

And should you be getting ready to cast your referendum vote, or should you just give all that a break right now?

Well, in the opinion of this news desk - it seems that there is only a remote chance that a referendum will be held on April 10th.  But, however remote there is still a chance - but we wouldn't bet on it.  This is completely uncharted territory, It now all rests with the Chief Justice who will have a hearing on Monday - and the Prime Minister hopes he will give a favourable decision on Tuesday - letting the referendum go through.
