On The Subject of Security
posted (April 3, 2019)

NICH, UB, Galen and the University of the West Indies organized the 2nd annual Belize National Research Conference. It was held this morning at the UB Jaguar auditorium in Belmopan. The main topic was security and the keynote speaker was Ministry of National Security  CEO Felix Enriquez. We found out more.

Nigel Encalada - Director, ISCR Â
"This year's topic is Belize's security, opportunities and strengths and threats. It is one of the strategies as I have said earlier, we are working on to aid the development of the country, particularly we look for research that is targeting a particular development sector so you will see research in the area of agriculture, you will see research in the area of tourism, the Belize Guatemala issue, you will see papers on Belize's health security, social security."

Felix Enriquez - CEO, Ministry of National Security
"I am very happy that they chose citizen security as the theme for this year's conference. I really think that it is timely considering what happens 7 days from now and also because of everything else that surrounds us in the region and the research that is required, the think tanks that we need to put together to ensure we stay on top of the game and even ahead of the game. I tried to focus on the pillars that our national defense and security strategy are based on and try to focus on some of the goals we think are the keys to success to ensure that Belize remains on top of its security requirements. I spoke a bit about the lack of resources and the need for us to work together and not in silos as a people, not just as a government."

A research conference website will be created soon and the public will have access to the presentations and edited research papers. The team is also working on a National Research Council of Belize.
