Dealing With The Science Not Symptoms of Flooding
posted (April 3, 2019)

Flash floods ripped through Cayo in 2017, and the Mayor and Area Rep responded by asking the Taiwanese for technical help to figure out how to be more ready next time.  They set up a pilot program named "Construction of Flood Warning Capacity in Belize".  It studied Digital Elevation Models as well as Flood Potential Maps to get to the science, rather than the symptoms of flash floods.

Now, the project will bring in resources to design suitable infrastructure and an early warning system.  The Cooperation in Urban Resilience and Disaster Prevention Project was signed yesterday afternoon at the George Price Centre.  Area Rep Omar Figueroa explained what it includes:

The ambitious project coincides with the Taiwanese Government's 30th anniversary of relations with Belize.

Bella Vista Villagers Protest

About 60 Villagers from Bella Vista Village in the Toledo District staged a protest outside the Immigration office in Punta Gorda Town this morning. They did it to support their village pastor, a Salvadoran - whose visitor's permit expires on April the 21st.  But, the villagers said they came for him anyway:

THE VILLAGERS are accusing another man from the church of calling immigration because he wants the land church is on.
