Resignation Ruction At City Hall? Or A Poker Prank?
posted (April 5, 2019)

Belize City councillor Ryan Eligio’s facebook page lit up last night with a stunning post.  It said, quote, “I work too hard for my name and will never (neat) it up for no one…with immediate effect I will no longer be a part of this council.â€￾ Close quote.  So, what’s up with that?  Well, we checked with the mayor’s office which said it could not comment because it had gotten no notice of resignation.  So we checked with Eligio who, quite predictably, told us that his facebook page had been hacked.  And then he told us it was a “poker prank.â€￾

He said he’s a good PUP and that everything is fine between him and the mayor.  We’ll take that at face value - but we know that one councillor remains in the Mayor’s dog house - and that’s Micah Goodin.  As we’ve reported, the councillor was stripped of all his portfolios 6 weeks ago - and now, he’s not even being invited to council meetings.  That;S tight, 7News has obtained a letter that Goodin sent to the Mayor on March 21st protesting this exclusion.  He says, quote,  “a sitting of the council was held on Tuesday.  However, no invitation was ever sent to me.  Additionally, the minutes of the previous council sitting are yet to be forwarded to me by email as per normal.  I write this email to inquire why the invitation and the minutes of the last meeting were not made available to me.  The Belize City Council Act allows me the opportunity to attend the sittings of the council without prejudice….despite the removal of my portfolios I am to attend these council sittings and relay the concerns of residents. Â I have remain engaged with residents citywide and have documented a long list of concerns I hope could have been remedied by way of the recent council sitting.â€￾

And then he concludes, quote, “To deny me that opportunity is not only unjust but illegal and contravenes the Belize City Council Act.  After 12 long years in Opposition we have to get it right.   It is time we put our selfish differences aside and truly work for the common good….â€￾

We asked the council for comment on the non -invitation today but they simply said, the mayor will not comment at this time.
