Private Attorney In Charge Of Prosecution Branch
posted (April 5, 2019)

She’s a former city councillor and a trained attorney who also happens to be the daughter of Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington, and, now, 7News has confirmed that Alifa Elrington-Hyde is also the new Head of the Prosecution Branch.

As viewers may know, the Prosecution Branch is in charge of preparing all criminal charges for defendants who are taken before the Magistrate’s Courts. Police officers are usually the ones who lead the prosecution of those cases. They work very closely with the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and crown counsels from that office, as well as the DPP herself, who often advise the police prosecutors on how to proceed with those charges.

Those police prosecutors are led by Superintendent Carol Tucker, who is the officer commanding the Prosecution Branch. Well, they now have 2 bosses because Elrington-Hyde takes up leadership as the Head. We are unsure which of the posts are the most senior of the two.  To our knowledge it is the first time a civilian and trained attorney is taking up leadership of this important office.

Elrington-Hyde’s leadership took effect as of Monday, April 1st, and sources told us that when she showed up at the headquarters, the officials present were surprised. They had reportedly not been informed of the change.
