16 Year Old Sentenced For Killing 15 Year Old
posted (April 10, 2019)
2 weeks ago, we told you about the 16 year-old boy from Belize City who pleaded guilty to manslaughter for the last year's fatal stabbing of 15 year-old Arkel August. Well, Justice Colin Williams has decided that he will spend 3 and a half more years in jail for Arkel's killing.

The killing happened less than a year ago, on April 28, 2018, on the basketball court at Cumberbatch Field, located on Caesar Ridge Road. The 16 year-old and Arkel August, were playing basketball on opposite teams when a misunderstanding ensued between them and another boy. The 16 year-old was accused of playing dirty and he was sent home by the coach. He then left and returned shortly afterwards with a pocket knife, which he used to fatally stab Arkel in his chest. On March 26th, the 16 year-old pleaded guilty to manslaughter, instead of murder.

Before he decided on the sentence, Justice Williams heard pleas for mitigation from one character witness, the convict himself, and his attorney, Darrell Bradley. The 16 year-old gave an emotional testimony, and he told the court that he was sorry for what had happened and that he never wanted it to happen. His attorney also submitted to the court that this is his first offense. Justice Williams also heard testimony from Arkel's mother, who told the court that she has forgiven him for the death of her son. She said that she hopes he will be able to excel in life.

After consideration, the judge decided on a 10 year sentence as a starting point. He then made several deductions from the sentence given that the defendant pleaded guilty, his age when he committed the offense, and his time spent on remand. At the final calculation, the judge announced to him that he will have to spend 3 years and 6 more months in jail for this conviction.

Senior Crown Counsel Shanice Lovell prosecuted the case.

From our archives we have dug up some footage of Arkel taken as a youth in 2006 when he was just a kid - involved in a community computer education program to keep children off the streets and away from the violence of the street.
