Critical After Crooked Tree Beatdown
posted (April 17, 2019)
19 year-old Ravin Gillett, a fisherman from Crooked Tree Village, is at the Belize Central Prison tonight after he was taken to court for allegedly joining several men who ganged up on another resident and put a bad beating on him.

The incident happened on Sunday April 7th, 2019 in Crooked Tree. Elton Baiza was socializing in the village when he was attacked by a group of persons who beat him up badly, and left him severely injured. He was rushed to the KHMH by a concerned civilian, and court reports say that he is in a critical condition.

Police investigated the assault, and they arrested and charged Gillett with attempted murder and grievous harm. He was arraigned today before Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson, and the Magistrate indicated to him that no plea would be taken from, since these are indictable offenses.

The police prosecutor objected to Gillett being granted bail on the grounds that Baiza is in a critical condition, and if his health worsens, he could die at the hospital. It was at that point that Gillett asked to be heard, and he reportedly told the court, quote, "I only kicked him three times…"

Senior Magistrate Pitts-Anderson advised him that it was best that he said nothing at this time that could incriminate him. She upheld the objection from the prosecutor, and she remanded him to the Belize Central Prison until June 25th, 2019, his next court date.
