No More Opposition Obstruction? PUP Leader Tells Troops To Get Ready For Referendum
posted (April 24, 2019)
Government has set the ICJ referendum date for May 08th, and, now, it seems the PUP will no longer stand in the way; the opposition is getting ready for a referendum.

There was speculation that the PUP would go back to the courts to block the referendum again, but, it appears that the Blue's will instead go to the court of public opinion and urge voters to say no to the ICJ.

We've seen a letter dated yesterday that leader John Briceño wrote to all his standard bearers. It says quote, "As you are aware, despite our legal challenge and processes which continue to run its course through the Court system, the Prime Minister moved ahead and set 8 May 2019 as the new date for the…Referendum. He took this decision in spite of our request to hold off for us to find a way to work together and to restore the bipartisan effort to find a lasting solution to Guatemala's unfounded claim." End quote.

Additionally, Briceño says, quote, "we still have thousands of Belizeans being kept off the voter register, there are still many loose ends with respect to the management of the referendum by the Election and Boundaries Department, the one sided nature of the education campaign has still not been addressed and issues like the repeal or replacement of the Maritime Areas Act along with those other issues set out in the People's Declaration have not been met." End quote.

But with all that, Briceño moves on to to explain that the course of action his party leaders should pursue now is to encourage supporters to go out on May 8th and Vote "No" to the ICJ.

Briceno then adds, quote, "This means that the Party's message from now through 8th May is NO to the ICJ."

He then asks all standard bearers to activate their campaign committees to hit the streets and ensure that PUP supporters come out in large numbers on referendum day to vote "no." He is also asking that the standard bearers work with the party's National Campaign Committee, and the secretariat to put election day plans in place to secure a no vote to the ICJ.
