Honduran Fishers in Belizean Waters
posted (April 24, 2019)
The Southern Environmental Association caught 3 Hondurans illegally fishing inside the Gladden Spit and Silk Caye Marine Reserve, one of the 3 reserves they co-manage for the Government.

SEA reports that on Sunday, April 20th, a joint patrol SEA rangers and the Belize Coast Guard visited an area within the Spawning Aggregation Zone of the reserve. That's a no-take area, but they found the vessel, "Angelica", anchored there. The Belizean law enforcement team found 3 Hondurans, Ewin Geovanny Carcamo Banegas, Hector Arnaldo Rodriguez Martinez, and Wilford Machado. Onboard their vessel, the Belizeans found a large storage containers which contained several mutton snappers.

All 3 men were charged with the offense of engaging in commercial fishing whilst not being the holder of a valid fisherman's license; engaging in fishing without a special license in Spawning Aggregation Zone in the Gladden Spit and Silk Caye Marine Reserve; and using a vessel for commercial fishing without a valid boat license to fish. They were arraigned in the Independence Magistrates Court, and they pleaded guilty to all 3 offenses. They were fined $1,500 which they had to pay forthwith or be sent to jail for 6 months.

SEA continues to be concerned about illegal fishing activities in Southern Belize, and they say that they will continue to conduct strategic patrols to ensure the protection of Belize's marine resources.
