Cycling Federation Says Justin Williams Is An American
posted (April 24, 2019)
Justin Williams - he's a two time Cross Country Champion - and we've proudly claimed him and his brother, fellow cyclist Corey as Belizeans - even though they're Belizean Americans, US citizens born to Belizean parents in California.

And this weekend, after a disappointing Cross Country finish, Justin Williams took to social media to blast the Belize Cycling Federation for failing to deliver on prizes as promised, and for not letting he and his brother bring a team of riders from the states - because they are Belizean cyclists, while at the same time not letting them get the station prizes reserved for Belizean cyclists - because they are American registered riders.

Indeed, they brothers are caught between two nationalities, and today the cycling federation said it plainly: they should not be registered as Belizean riders. A release this evening says, quote, "The status of Justin and Cory Williams as it relates to their nationality was erroneous from the very first time they were allowed to participate in Belize as Belizeans in the 2006 Junior National Championships….For all intents and purposes they are classified and recognized as American citizens with parents who were born in Belize." End quote.

The 600 word release which includes 16 attachments goes on to demonstrate at some length that the brothers have been offered to register internationally as Belizean cyclists - but have opted not to do so because of opportunities available to them as US registered cyclists. It notes that Justin is the reigning amateur US National Criterium Champion and is under consideration to participate as a member of the US National Team in an upcoming Tour.

And, on the subject of a price of land promised as a 2015 prize, the Federation says, quote, "the President of the Federation…liaised with Justin over a period of years up until 2018 arranging many meetings with the Minister of Lands to complete the process. The last meeting that was arranged was for his dad and mom as Justin had indicated that he wanted the land to be in his mother's name. As far as we know, they never attended the meeting." End quote. It adds that In 2018, quote "after much deliberation over the conversion of the Belize dollars to US dollars, he instructed us to pay the cash prizes to Glen Flowers and the gift certificates to David Henderson. All prizes were paid."

The release ends by almost scolding Williams, saying, quote, "respect for fellow athletes and officials in all capacities is paramount and an integral part of all sports." End quote.
