Compol Chester Goes After Association President
posted (April 25, 2019)
So at the top of the news you heard what Commissioner of Police Chester Williams had to say in response to the Caribbean Federation of Police's release. Well, for background on how this entire situation started, Commissioner Williams says this has been a long standing issue going back to the days of former Commissioner Allen Whylie. Williams says Arzu has failed to present an audit of the finances of the Belize Police Association. Basically Williams says Arzu has not been acting in good faith as the president and has not been working in the best interest of the association nor its members. Here is what he had to say.

Chester Williams- Police Commissioner
"This matter with Mr. Arzu did not start with me. It started from the previous commissioner Mr. Whylie. It just so happened that it played out more after I took over as commissioner in January of this year. Like he rightly said in whatever comments he may have made in the past or those who made comments in his behalf - that he was elected and that is respected. The same way that Mr. Arzu wants to be respected, he should also respect his superiors as well as respect all members of the central board. That central board elected WCPL Jane Usher, a very competent woman police officer as the treasurer and up to today Mr. Arzu have refused to hand over the responsibility of the association finance to her. That cannot be allowed. Since January, the other members of the association have been requesting of the president Mr. Arzu to call a central board meeting. So that they can discussed issues and see how they progressed as an association. He has set up dates to meet with them and when the date and time comes, he did no show up and so I really and truly can't wait to the day to come where we can say we have an association that is prepared to work for the better good of all the members of the association, rather than having one where one man seems to believe that he is the association."

Of course, Williams also had to answer tough questions which the Police Association would normally bring forward - and those have to do with working conditions for police. We did ask him about those issues, and we'll have that for you in tomorrow's news.
