Rider Wasani and The High-Speed Rub-Down
posted (April 26, 2019)

He finished an outstanding 12th in the cross country and was the 5th Belizean to cross the line on Holy Saturday - but, tonight, Wasani Castro is under scrutiny.  That's after this video emerged which shows him hanging unto a pickup and jetting along the highway near Cotton Tree during the race.

Maybe because he's a minister's son - it's caused quite a stir on Facebook, and even some cycling veterans say he should be sharply penalized if not disqualified.

While that is a decision for the Cycling Federation to make, Castro took to Facebook to defend himself. He says he was only getting a "rub down"

Wasani Castro
"Anybody that really look on the video could clearly see Mr. Lamb, halfway out of the vehicle the give me a quick rub up for a couple seconds, nothing too long but a quick rub up. You could clearly see in the video that's only 7 seconds you understand and anybody that have common sense to know that if I never had legs, I would have never run down the curve that was in front of me and managed to come in 12th place - better than a lot of contenders that are about for years ago. I am only on my bike for 10 months, they should be ashamed of themselves."

Typically, one or two weeks after races, the Cycling Federation issues Disciplinary Reports where cyclists are fined for such infractions.  Fines rarely exceed one hundred dollars.
