Labour Day Violence Leaves Two Dead
posted (May 2, 2019)
After a period of relative calm, violence spiked over the labour day holiday, and tonight there are three murders to report.

We start on the Hummingbird Highway where a 24 year old Steadfast villager was murdered yesterday evening around 5:30.

Alberto Requena was heading to his home in the village when a group of men attacked him and stabbed him multiple times. Requena tried to ride off on his bicycle to get away but he collapsed on the side of the Hummingbird Highway. A boy who passed by later in the evening saw Requena's body and alerted his family. Courtney Weatherburne has more.

Courtney Weatherburne reporting
Alberto Requena collapsed and took his final breath in this drain on the Hummingbird Highway.

His brother covered the spot with stone powder, but Requena's blood still stained the road where he was stabbed.

Yesterday evening, a group of men jumped Requena as he was heading to his Steadfast home on his bicycle.

Maricela Requena, Sister
"What I found out is that my brother went to get a hair cut and when he was coming back that is when they attacked him."

One of Requena's brothers says Requena left to get his hair cut, went home and then left the house again later in the evening. He was attacked on his way back home.

Reports are that the attakers are from the village and hang out under this shed which is near the crime scene.

Family members say they have no reason to believe anyone was after Requena or that he had any issues with anyone.

They say he was a dedicated construction worker, building the bridge in the village. He would go to work and keep to himself.

Maricela Requena, Sister
"He is never about looking for trouble with no one. My brother is a calm guy and when he work he always work, go home, and sometimes he goes to his friend but he never looks for trouble and he never about drinking."

"We no have no idea why they attacked my brother. I don't know because he is a person who does not look for problem with anyone so I don't know what is the idea just maybe they do it to have fun the drugs up themselves and feel like they are the owners of that spot, they want to feel like they own it, they don't want anyone to pass their because they want to demand things from you and if you don't give them what they ask for they always want to hurt you."

Now the Requena family is desperate for answers and justice but also, they are left to mourn another loved one who has been violently taken from them.

Maricela Requena, Sister
"Almost one year we lose my sisters and now this pain they gave us again that hurt and that person who do it deserve to pay for what he do because I don't think the law will make him come out with that because my brother did not deserve what they did him my pa is just trying to get over one and now another hard pain for him."

Requena did not have any kids.

As you heard in the story, Requena's sister, Rosita Requena was killed in a hit and run in May 2018 near Silk Grass Village.
