Big Bucks For Big Divisions?

So, as Belize gets ready for Referendum Wednesday - we all have to bear in mind that this is not an election - and the voting will not be tallied on a constituency basis. What do we mean by that? Well in a regular political election - whichever party wins 16 of the 31 constituencies has a majority of the seats in parliament and forms the government. Well, this is nothing like that. It's similar in that you will vote in one of 31 constituencies countrywide - but it doesn't really matter whether the "yes" or the "no" vote got the majority in your division. Those "yes" and "no" votes have to be tabulated by the Elections and Boundaries office as part of the total number of votes cast nationally.

That means that big divisions, with a large number of voters like Belmopan, Cayo Central and Stann Creek West could have a much greater effect on the final outcome than say…the much smaller Albert division where our studio is located. We today asked the Prime Minister if his party is spending more money in those larger divisions which will have a greater effect on the final vote count:…
