Election Observers In Effect
posted (May 7, 2019)
Polls open at 7am and close at 6pm. And, the Elections and Boundaries office stressed today that if you don't have a voters identification card - don't worry, it is not essential.

A public notice says, quote, "The Elections and Boundaries Department hereby reminds electors who wish to vote in the May 8th, 2019 Belize Territorial Dispute Referendum that they are allowed to vote WITH OR WITHOUT an identification card.

The Department encourages electors to exercise their right to vote in this Referendum. Remember, your vote is SACRED and SECRET!" End quote.

And to make sure the process is legit, there will be a team of international observers as well as local monitors overseeing the process. The Chief elections Officer told us more about that:

Josephine Tamai, Chief Elections Officer
"On May 8th when the observers are at the stations, there will be persons who will be there at the different polling stations and counting stations to observe the entire process all up to counting. They will be there just to ensure that everything is going smoothly and to observe what is happening on referendum day."

Local groups monitoring the referendum are representatives from the Government, the main Opposition, the unions, the churches and the NGOs. Observers are from the British Embassy, the US Embassy, Taiwan Embassy, CARICOM and The Commonwealth.
