Integrity Commission Sworn In For Another Term
posted (May 15, 2019)
In late 2016, when the teachers union went on strike demanding greater transparency from government, the re-activation of the long dormant integrity commission was one of their key demands. And, it was re-activated, to fair effect: we are reliably informed that several elected politicians were extremely late last year in submitting their financial records to the Commission. Because of the late filings, they have racked up many thousands of dollars in penalties. Their names have been handed over to the DPP for prosecution - we are told.

That's the good news - but the bad news is that - without anyone noticing - the Commission slipped into inactivity earlier this year.

The term of the Commission expired at the end of January and the new commission wasn't sworn in until this morning in Belmopan. That's three and half months of inactivity for the office.

The Commission continues to be led by Chairman Deshawn Arzu - who was sworn in earlier - and is continued by returning members Wilmot Simmons, Net Vasquez, Armeid Gabourel, Claudette Grinage, Lisbeth Delgado and new member Zoe Roberson- Zetina.
