Assad Shoman Says Yes Vote Was victory For Belize
posted (May 16, 2019)
Assad Shoman has been named Belize's Agent at the International Court of Justice in the Hague. The word "agent" seems vague, but it's the official name for a critical post. The Agent is the team captain for the ICJ effort, coordinating all the legal, diplomatic, and organizational elements in the ICJ case.

Tonight, in an exclusive interview, he speaks about what his top priorities are in that role. But, first, we asked him to reflect on a tough campaign to get Belizean to vote "yes" to the ICJ. He said it is a people's victory:...

H.E. Assad Shoman- Named Belize's Agent at the ICJ
"Well, I felt really good about the Belizean people. They have been put through a severe test and they have overcome all obstacles to reach a decision which, in my opinion and obviously in theirs- the majority anyhow, is for the better good of Belize. I felt also that, you know, I've been through this movie before. Something very similar happened in the late 70's as you know. When equally or more so, more so I think, there were a lot of negative views about taking independence. But a lot of people at the end saw through all of that and all the personal abuse of course, which was much more than now I can tell you so. When I say I'm used to it, that's an understatement. And then now it fell on us to continue and finish that struggle by finally getting rid of the Guatemalan claim. So, people last week enabled the nation to do that and I congratulate them. The case is not going to be hard. The hardest thing was getting our people to understand and agree after they were bombarded by so much false propaganda and well you know the story."

Jules Vasquez- Reporter
"Your feeling at this point is excitement of anxiety?"

H.E. Assad Shoman
"No, no, no, no anxiety at all, you know. I've said through out that we have such a strong case, in my view, an invincible case. So, there is no anxiety. There is just concern that we do the work. I mean, it is a lot of work, it has to be done, it has to be organized. It is not a one man show or a two man show. A lot of people have to contribute to this process."
