Will There Be Battles on The Bipartisan Committee?
posted (May 21, 2019)
And Peyrefitte will have to get along with Courtenay - they are two of the four members of the bi-partisan committee which will consult and offer guidance to the government on the ICJ case.

It's a four person committee - with no government majority. Wilfred Elrington and Peyrefitte represent the government, while Eamon Courtenay and attorney Leslie Mendez represent the opposition.

Now, looking at Courtenay and Elrington and their known history, that could be a combustible mix of personalities. We asked Peyrefitte about it:..

Reporter
"Having Wilfred Elrington and Eamon Courtenay who are persons that have a known history and you are always fuel to fire. How hopeful can we be in a genuine way for that group?"

Hon. Michael Peyrefitte, UDP Senator
"You imagine that I will be the calming factor in that group? We will work fine. Listen I have no doubt. I know Sedi very well, he loves nothing more than this country called Belize and he has been working for this for his entire life and this is something that he puts above everything else. So he will check whatever he has to check to make sure that we have fruitful discussions, similarly with Senator Courtenay, whenever we have to work on anything he has always humbled himself which is an amazing thing to say and we've had fruitful discussions especially when the issue is important. This you cannot have a more important issue than this. So I imagine that there will be discussions, there will be back and forth - this is democracy, democracy is messy, but I am very confident that with the 4 of us there we will truly report to our respective parties and together to the people of Belize as to the progress to the ICJ."

The date of the bipartisan committee's first meeting has not been made public.
