Hands, Sands And A Serious Message
posted (May 22, 2019)

The annual Hands Across the Sand initiative was held on Saturday. Belize was among countries like the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Greece to commemorate this event. It may seem like a simple gesture for a bunch of people to hold hands on a beach but it sends a strong message against offshore oil drilling and for the protection and preservation of marine life and the environment. Here's more from OCEANA'S communications director.

Alysa Noble Carnegie - OCEAN Communications Director
"Hands across the sand was held this past Saturday the 18th at 12:00 noon in different municipalities I think we had 12 different municipalities participating and we had about 200 maybe 300 people show up to participate we do it every year it is originally set up after the BP oil spill the effects of which we are still feeling globally. Belize joins other countries honouring hands across the sands. We are taking a stand against dirty industries like fossil fuel especially off shore oil exploration and off shore oil industries and saying yes to cleaner alternatives saying yes to sustainability. We are really excited about a little over a year ago the Belize government passed what we called the people's law in terms of the moratorium on off shore oil exploration and the off shore oil industry in Belize and we are very happy to see that Belizeans are so passionate about the issue that even after that they are still committed to maintaining Belize's marine resources and preserving it for future generations so we are very excited."

Other countries commemorated the day in their own way.
