Elrington Sides With PM: Seek A Sarstoon Protocol, Not Provisional Measures
posted (May 23, 2019)

And while time will tell if the PUP reps were boycotting or just busy, right now, that’s a distraction.

The priority right now is regularizing movements not he Sarstoon.

We also asked Foreign Affairs Minister Elrington about the next step on our southern boundary river. Elrington agrees with the Prime Minister in saying that the best way forward is to talk it out and come to an agreement with the Guatemalans rather than going to the ICJ for provisional measures.

Hon. Wilfred Elrington - Minister of Foreign Affairs
"The significance of this vote is that the court is going to determine what are our rights in international law, it is not going to be any kind of compromise, this is not going to be any kind of deal. This is simply an articulation of our legal rights as seen by the International Court of Justice, that is also significant in now that we have now in fact agreed to go to the ICJ, we can now access lawfully the services of the court to help us keep our country more safe and secure event while the case is going through its course in the Hague so if life becomes intolerable on the Sarstoon there is provision for us to apply to the ICJ for ameliorating measures."

Courtney Weatherburne
"And that leads to my next question do you believe we should go straight to the ICJ to ask for those provisional measures to be enforced or first as the PM said liaise or talk with the Guatemalans before?"

Hon. Wilfred Elrington
"I always agree with the prime minster, really and truly we will have to live side by side with the Guatemala’s from now until eternity and the best way we can do that is by ensuring that we have a good relationship with them it is always better to be better to develop a good relationship with your neighbours than that relationship to depend on some court order. It is always good to work out difficulties if we can do that without having to go court so I agree 100 percent with the prime minister."
