Compol Debunks Grenade Scare At City School
posted (May 28, 2019)
This morning, parents at one of the city's biggest primary schools - which is Holy Redeemer - were on pins and needles after a panic message started circulating last night. It said that a grenade would be thrown at the school today. That understandably terrified parents.

And, the Commissioner of Police Chester Williams took to social media this morning to put them at ease. His message said, quote, "we put measures in place to prevent any such thing from occurring….the BDF bomb expert will be checking the compound before any teach or student is allow in this morning."

That bomb expert did do a full scan before school started and gave the all clear just after 8:00, which is when the Principal sent out a message saying there would be regular classes.

Today at his Belmopan press conference, Commissioner Williams said the threat was bogus but they don't anything for granted:..

Chester Williams - Police Commissioner
"We received information from early last night, and since then, I had directed that we put police to guard the compound throughout the night, and that the BDF bomb expert be brought in early this morning, to ensure that the grounds be checked properly before students and or teachers are allowed on the compound. And so, that was done. The bomb expert cleared the building around 6:45 this morning, and certified that the compound and buildings were safe. And we maintain police presence throughout the day today, and the police presence will maintain right throughout, until the end of this school term. I will say that while I have heard some comments to the effect that we've never had any bomb threat that really turned out to a bomb being present, that as a police department, we don't take anything for grant. And every bomb threat that we receive, we will respond to it as if it is real. Especially, where it involves our children, we need to ensure that we take good care of our children, and ensure that they're safe at all time. And a school is no place for a person to try to declare a bomb threat."

"Police say that they know where the threat came from, and they are currently in search of an individual who they will pursue as best as they can. If that person is found, he or she will have questions to answer to the police, and that person can be criminally charged."
