Compol: “The Less Bars We Have The Better Our Society Is Going To Be.”
posted (May 28, 2019)
Last week we told you about the directive from the Commissioner of Police to all formations, urging them to crack down on on alcohol related offenses And liquor license violations.

Today, the Compol said it is a major driver of crime:...

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"If we were to combine both crime and traffic related incidents you would see that alcohol is responsible for more than 50% of deaths in Belize and we need to find a way to ensure that. And so we are pointing out to the commanders that these laws do exist and having looked at the crimes being committed across the country, we have come to the conclusion that many of these crimes are alcohol driven. And so if it is that we can control the consumption and sale of alcohol that it will be able to make us more successful in the fight against crime. Now it is not to say that we are telling anybody whether or not they should consume alcohol. We are simply saying if you consume alcohol you must do it lawfully, meaning we are not going to tolerate or condone any public drinking; we are not going to tolerate or condone any assembly in front of any store or liquor establishment, we are not going to tolerate or condone any minors buying alcohol, we are not going to tolerate or condone minors selling alcohol, we are not going to tolerate or condone minors going to nightclubs and we are not going to tolerate or condone any liquor license premise to be opened beyond the time prescribed by law. And so we are very serious abour enforcing these laws with a view to make our citizens more safer."

Williams concluded by saying, quote, "The less bars we have the better our society is going to be." End quote.

He is also sending memorandums to chairmen of liquor license boards. Williams noted ass well that in Belmopan and Dangriga, the liquor license board have closed down a number of establishments that were unfit to be licensed as bars.
