Police Say Anti-Crime Strategies Working
posted (May 28, 2019)
At the top of the news, we told you how police in Belize City managed to successfully foil a broad daylight robbery at A&R store on Saturday afternoon. The cops were quickly able to intercept 2 fleeing teenagers after the store's employees handed over $1,500 in cash at gunpoint.

After a short exchange of gun fire, the cops apprehended the robbers without injury, and they have been arrested and charged. Today, the Deputy Commissioner in charge of Operations and Crime, told the press, that this is one example where their anti-crime strategies are at work. Here's what he had to say about those strategies:

ACP Edward Broaster - Deputy ComPol, Ops and Crime
"With the strategies that we have in place, we believe that the effectiveness of our officers in the City, in particular, has manifested itself over the weekend, which resulted in the interception and consequent arrest of 3 individuals who went and fired shots the Ordonez Avenue area, where two 9mm [pistols] were recovered. And we'd like to applaud our police officers for their bravery, and the great work that they've been doing, as well as the two incidents at A&R, where 2 individuals went to rob the store. And our officers, again, were able quick to respond to the scene, encountering the armed individuals in the store, where shots were exchanged, and those 2 individuals were apprehended again, and a firearm was recovered."

"We've been doing some diligent work in terms of investigating and charging members involving in gang activities. And last week, we had 4 individuals who changed their plea to guilty, after however, the amount of time, effort, and monies that we've been putting into these investigation, we're looking at ways in which those fines - or we can look at recouping those monies. $3,000 is a little bit too low in our estimation, and we believe that the work that has been done to enhance citizen security in getting these gang members off the street, we certainly hope that those fines can be increased, and like I said, we'll be discussing ways in which we can possibly look at recovering other monies that have been invested in those investigations."
