San Narciso Mourns Elderly Couple
posted (May 30, 2019)
Tonight, the Chan family - and indeed the entire community of San Narciso, Corozal is mourning the loss of two of its beloved Senior Citizens.

As we showed you last night, the elderly couple Audomaro and Ramona Chan were killed when an 18 wheeler rammed violently into their Ford Ranger - virtually snapping the little pickup under the Freightliner's massive front end.

Today, 7News went to the northern village and found a large imprint of grief:...

Jules Vasquez reporting
Audomauro and Ramona Chan didn't have a chance. Their Ford Ranger was crushed beyond recognition. Two hours after the accident, it had to be hauled across the pavement - almost like scrap metal.

This is after it was slammed by thousands of pounds of impact from this fast moving, and loaded 18 wheeler - which plowed into the small pickup as it made a left turn into the village polyclinic.

Police say the collision pushed the pickup almost 100 feet from the point of first impact.

71 year old Ramona Chan was in the passenger seat. Villagers took her broken body out of the vehicle and put her under the bus stop which is where she died.

74 year old Audomauro did not get the brunt of the impact and he survived - but after an ambulance ride to the Corozal Hospital and then back to the KHMH, he died on the way.,

The couple had been married for 51 years - and had 10 children in San Narciso where they were well known:

Elvis Correa, Chairman - San Narciso
"Well known at the village and my neighbors, good friends - so it was a big shock for me."

Chairman Elvis Correa says that the area in front of the newly opened clinic needs a speedbump:

Elvis Correa, Chairman - San Narciso
"Yes, I have been asking for it."

Reporter
"What was the ministry's response?"

Elvis Correa, Chairman - San Narciso
"One of the things that they told me, that they can't put speed bump every hundred feet, because they have many speed bumps on the road, so they can't put too much bumps. That's one of the answers that they gave me."

Reporter
"You think they will put the bump now?"

Elvis Correa, Chairman - San Narciso
"Well I hope."

But, it would be too late to save his neighbour's lives - a devout couple:

Elvis Correa, Chairman - San Narciso
"They were Catholics. They were well-known at the village. I think Mr. Audomauro was a leader of the church, taking care of it and one of the things that I will always remember is his white hair, because he was almost fully white and he was in church almost every day. I think he was to be in the church today, because we have confirmations today. But he is a next place now."

The couple had been married for 51 years. The family tells us that Audomaro was active and regularly drove his pickup. He had taken wis wife to the clinic in the morning, and was going for an injection when the accident occurred. The family is preparing to bury them tomorrow.
