Man Charged For Stabbing Senior Citizen
posted (May 30, 2019)
Last night, we told you about 67 year old Frank Arnold, the resident of Neal's Penn Road, who was viciously stabbed multiple times on Tuesday night near his house. Well, the man who they say was the knife wielder is 29 year-old Ronald Percival Augustus Flowers.

He's at the Belize Central Prison on remand, and we'll tell you about his arraignment at Magistrate's Court today. But first, we start with the comments from police who discussed the case at today's bi-weekly police press briefing. Here's what they told us about their investigation so far:

ASP Alejandro Cowo - OC, CIB Belize City
"On Tuesday night, sometime after 8 p.m., Mr. Frank Arnold, a 67 year-old Belizean, was riding his bicycle on Neal's Penn Road, when he was attacked by a male person, who was identified as Ronald Flowers. As a result, Ronald Flowers inflicted stab wounds to Mr. Arnold, and he was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition. Based on that report, police conducted an investigation, and on yesterday's date, Mr. Ronald Flowers, 20 years-old, was charged for the crime of attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm, and dangerous harm. Mr. Flowers is still admitted in a critical condition at the hospital."

"Has a motive been ascertained as to why the victim was targeted?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"What he understand is that he was just riding his bicycle, when he was attacked by the the male person. There was no discussion amongst them. It was just an attack."

Reporter
"Was there any previous dispute?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"There is no previous dispute among them."

Reporter
"Sir, we got reports that Mr. Flowers may be mentally ill or mentally challenged."

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"What we understand is that he does visit the clinic on Fabers Road on a daily basis, to obtain medication. However, we don't have anything to certify that he is a mental patient."

"I know that he was interviewed, and when he was being questioned, he acted like a normal person. Remember, we mentioned that he does get his medication on a daily basis. However, we know that whenever he goes to the court, I know that the Magistrate orders for an evaluation to be conducted on the person, so that he can certify if he is a person who is fit to stand trial."

Ronald Flowers was arraigned today on the charges of attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm, and dangerous harm before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford. Senior Magistrate Ford explained to him that she will not take a plea because the offences are indictable, which means that a plea will only be taken when the matter is sent up to the Supreme Court. She also explained to Flowers that she cannot offer him bail until after 3 months has passed, because of the nature of the offences. She told that he can, however, obtain the service of an attorney who can apply to the Supreme Court for bail. She remanded him until August 7.
