Commissioner Confused About Strange Lawyer Letter
posted (May 31, 2019)
And where does Commissioner of Police Chester Williams stand on all this? Neal wrote a letter to him on May 30th saying, quote, "the purpose of this letter is to seek the intervention of your police department to stop Mr. Barrow from continued criminal behavior so that my client can move and socialize without fear of harassment and/or physical injury."

Now, we've seen lots of lawyer letters, but this one - basically asking for preemptive relief from something that is not clearly established - is a first for us.

Today the Commissioner told us he doesn't know what to make of it:...

Reporter
"I don't know how to describe the letter. What are your impressions of it?"

Chester Williams - Police Commissioner
"Honestly I don't know how to respond. I have seen the letter. I have read the letter and I'm still trying to find out why it was sent to me. Really and truly the police have not received a complaint from Mr. Bradley Roe. Right now there is nothing before the police from either Shyne or Bradley Roe that the police can act on. If it is that there is any action to be done, it would be something more civil than criminal and so to come to the police will not yield the desired results that they may need, because I have seen a letter where he had said that Mr. Shyne had made some accusation about his client and that he considered it to be defamatory and if that is the case then I am sure that Mr. Neal knows what to do. In this case I don't see the rational why the letter was sent to me. I don't know what am I supposed to do. I am contemplating my response and as soon as I have thought of it properly then I'm going to pen a response to the learned attorney."

As we said, reports suggest that Roe is seeking to sue Shyne Barrow for defamation. Shyne says he also plans to sue for the defamation contained in that lawyer letter. We'll keep following it.
