8 Week Old Boy Dead, Cause? Battered Child Syndrome
posted (June 3, 2019)
An 8 week old boy is dead - and baby Thevanne Banner's skull was cracked; the infant was the victim of Battered Child Syndrome. That is according to a post mortem which was just concluded.

The post mortem says, quote, "at the conclusion the cause of death was certified as due to fracture to the head and back, multiple skull fracture, and head trauma consistent to Battered Child Syndrome."

Today, Thevanne Banner's father, Troy Banner disputed that; he said the child died due to an adrenaline overdose at the hospital, and not from abuse:...

Troy Banner - Father
"The baby started to choke because I was feeding him. So, it was like he wasn't breathing well. So, I tried to do what I could do as a father, not knowing anything on the fret to try to get a response from him or to see him move or whatever. So, I tried my best to get some assistance from someone to bring us to the hospital. We reached hospital, the doctor received our child- Doctor Palacio, if I am not mistaking. They were giving the baby oxygen. Me and my girlfriend were standing there and we were witnessing the baby was breathing well and everything, well, was starting to breathe alright. The put on the drips on the baby. I witnessed they gave him three different syringes. They didn't state to us what was in the syringes. So, we were just observing then whole time hoping all was well with our child. Through 45 minutes to an hour they were there trying there best to do what they could do and from there the pediatrician came and checked up on the baby. She was checking his hands, his neck, his body. From there she said something. She was talking to the people in Spanish but we can't understand much Spanish so we didn't know what they were saying. From there, she took me and my girlfriend to the adjoining room and was talking to us. But like I said, she couldn't talk much English and we couldn't understand much Spanish. So, she called the doctor to translate for her. Unfortunately what she was telling the doctor, the doctor didn't even tell us anything or try to translate to us what was it that the pediatrician was saying to her. So, all the pediatricians said, after at least 10 to 15 minutes of being in front of her, how the baby has passed; he has died. So, I immediately ran back to the room that we were with the baby and I lift my son up a little bit and I asked what happened. They didn't reply to us. Then I remembered that I saw them giving him the three different syringes of some kind of medication or substance and from there when I started to ask what was the medication, what happened, no one even answered us. All they did was look at each other, look at me and my girlfriend and literally walked out from in front of us; each and everyone of them. There were about 5 to 6 of them in the room at the time. Now, only one was left, he wasn't actually doing anything with the baby. He was Doctor Gillette, he was actually passing and stopped and tried to give a little assistance; because doctor Gillette knows me and my girlfriend due to the clinic dates. He was my girlfriend's gynecologist a couple of times. So, he knows us somewhat because I was always there to make sure everything was right with my child in the belly and everything was also right with the mother. Well, he stated that, 'Oh, it was adrenaline.' That's all he said, to try to get the baby's heart beat. But now, what puzzles me is that we are asking questions. Like I said, we reached between 11:30 and 12 o clock. When they informed us that the baby has passed it was almost 1 o clock. They left us in that room with the baby on the bed. Everybody disappeared, turned Houdini, everyone just vanished. We were asking questions, no one wanted to reply to us. From there the doctor came back and stated that, 'Oh they have to call police to whatever because this and that and all kind of things.' She then state to the police that the baby was unresponsive when we reached. When that was wrong. So, I was talking to a male officer and a WPC reach who was taking a report and we were talking to them and right in front of...when one of the nurses came in, I guess she wanted to know what we were talking about with the officers to eavesdrop. Now, I guess her conscience couldn't take it and I asked her in front of the said WPC, who was in the room with us, what was the medication and why. She stated they gave that 8 week old baby, my son, Trivian Banner, four to five doses of adrenaline. They stated it was to get a heart beat, to get a heart rate up or something. But with an adult, I think four to five doses of adrenaline will have our heart beating very very rapidly. So, for an 8 week old baby I really don't think that was right. Now they are trying to say that the baby was unresponsive and they are trying to say it is a case of abuse and whatever and whatever and this and that and a whole different thing."

We note the interview was done before the post mortem result was known. And that post mortem has shown definitively that the infant had been abused. His father did deny the allegation of abuse:...

Troy Banner - Father
"All I just don't want them to do is; because I have a bad vibe that they are trying to fabricate stuff to try to take themselves out or whatever and make me and my girlfriend look like the bad persons. like if it was a case of abuse. But my son was only 8 weeks old. I have to be a damn fool or a crazy man to try and harm an 8 week old, my own child."

Again, the post mortem result which is just out out says the cause of death was certified as due to fracture to the head and back, multiple skull fracture, and head trauma consistent to Battered Child Syndrome.

Today, before the result was known police told us that the child showed up with bruises:.,.

ASP Alejandro Cowo - OC CIB
"Police visited the Western Regional Hospital where they observed an 8 week old baby apparently dead with some bruises to the face. What police gathered so far is that the father is alleging that he was feeding the minor when the minor began to experience breathing problems. As a result, he rushed the minor to the hospital and that is where the minor was pronounced dead on arrival. The father and the mother were detained and being questioned by police. The police is awaiting for a postmortem to be done to establish what can be the possible cause of death in regards to this minor."

Jules Vasquez - Reporter
"This happened in, you said Western Region, but..."

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"It happened in Camalote Village."

Jules Vasquez
"So, when will the postmortem be done?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"I believe it is underway right now."

Reporter
"Is there any suspicious signs on the body that would have made the police want to investigate? Any bruises for example?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"As I mentioned there were some bruises on the baby's body."

We note that only the father and mother were at home at the time of the child's death. Now, will the parents be charged? Police say it is under investigation. We'll have more on this tomorrow.
