Chaos At Compre
posted (June 5, 2019)

Dissent has been simmering for some time at Belmopan Comprehensive High.  And it arises from the fact that the administration has elected to allow 17 students to graduate - after they failed to mete minimum standards for graduation.

It's a process called "recuperation" and like everything else, it's complicated.

But, the broad outlines - and the sense of injustice it has inspired in students and faculty forced a spirited sitout today - in the middle of exam week.

It all went down a little after school started today and Courtesy PLUS TV we have video of the goings-on and interviews with the students:..

The staff sent out a release saying, quote, "This chain of events comes as a direct outcome of decisions by our school's administration There is NO recuperation policy for Fourth formers at B.C.S. Therefore, the proposal set forward by the administration is NOT in accordance with any existing policy.

After sending another email stating our position on the said issue, we convened yet again today at 8:00 a.m. to discuss our next move since the Board did not respond. students approached and queried about the matter. Thereafter, the news spread amongst students and in support of the teachers, many decided to leave the examination rooms and gathered at the basketball court to join teachers. Examinations were still given and were greatly compromised since only some students sat the exams. students who gathered at the court were then informed of the issue at hand and it was explicitly expressed to them that they were not obligated to be in solidarity with the teachers.

the matter has still not been resolved and teachers may take further actions." End quote.
