Father To Court For Causing Battered Baby’s Death
posted (June 6, 2019)
As we told you last night, Troy Banner has been charged with manslaughter for the death of his 8 week old son Trevane. While the infant's cruel death from multiple skull fractures and battered child syndrome has outraged many, police and the DPP's office could not find enough to charge him for anything more serious than manslaughter.

Banner was arraigned this morning in Belmopan and granted bail. 7news was there and we spoke with Banner's attorney. Hurl Hamilton, after the court session:

Hurl Hamilton, Attorney
"Well this morning Troy Banner has been charged with manslaughter and he was arraigned before magistrate this morning."

Courtney Weatherburne:
"And in terms of the bail, I guess you guys are working on that right now."

Hurl Hamilton, Attorney
"Well the prosecution objected to bail this morning siting that it is a serious offense, I of course argued for Mr. Banner to receive bail on the presumption of innocence and other factors must be taken into consideration other than the seriousness of the offense as the cogency of the evidence that the police has so far in my respectful view there isn't any evidence so far so based on that, the magistrate was inclined to grant bail to the sum of $10,000 and 2 sureties."

Reporter
"Was the social outcry as it relates to the nature of the situation, was that taken into consideration."

Hurl Hamilton, Attorney
"I would want to think so, that is the reason the prosecution objected but there is always the presumption of innocence, it is unfortunate that a child has died we cant get away from that fact but if anybody, who is responsible that is yet to be determined and I assume the police investigation is very young."

Banner met bail this evening and has to return to court on September 4th. As we reported, based on the results of the post mortem, the baby boy died due to fractures to the head and back - what is known as battered child syndrome.
