Escaped Prisoners Plead Guilty
posted (June 6, 2019)
They escaped from the Belize Central Prison last month, and, tonight, 31 year-old Rafael Mencias and 23 year-old Wilser Echeverria, are back behind bars serving out the rest of their prison sentence.

They were arraigned today before Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson on the offense of escaping from lawful custody, and they wasted no time, pleaded guilty to the charge. They both asked for leniency, and they were each sentenced 1 year imprisonment, which will run concurrently to the sentences they are already serving.

On May 7th, Echeverria and Mencias were stocking cement blocks in the industrial zone of the prison, when they and another prisoner, Christian Neal, made a daring escape. Echeverria and Mencias were captured shortly afterwards in the immediate area. Neal is still at large.

In 2015 Mencias was convicted of manslaughter for the fatal stabbing of Phillip Moses Hall and he was sentenced to 10 years by Justice Herbert Lord who stipulated that the remanded time of 5 years is to be subtracted from his sentence. Shorty after Mencias was released from prison, he was charged with the murder of Hilton Wade who stabbed several times, and then beheaded. Mencias is currently on remand for Wade's murder.

Echeverria is serving 16 years, which was handed down to him by Justice Antonette Moore. He was found guilty of manslaughter for the killing of the Panamanian Ambassador Jose Rodrigo De La Rosa, which occurred in November 2014.

Neal, the other inmate who is still on the run, was serving time for 2 counts of robbery and 1 count of unlawful carnal knowledge.
