posted (June 10, 2019)
The 2019 PSE scores are in and the results are… more of the same. Most of the over 7000 students who sat the exam received scores within the "E" range, which translates to an "Inadequate" performance according to the Ministry's grading scale. While there was some minor fluctuation in the students' performance, the

The average English score was 56.7%, a 1% increase from last year.

The Math scores also saw a 1% increase, with students averaging about 54%.

Students were most successful in Social Studies, receiving an average grade of 64.2%, the highest of the individual subject scores.

While these three subjects saw minor increases in performance, Science was the opposite. In 2018 60% of students received a "C" or "Satisfactory" mark. This year that number dropped to 46%, with an average score of 56.8% or a "D".

This year, none of the PSE's top 5 were from Belize City. This year's top performer wa Jasmine Espat from St. Andrew Anglican Primary School from Cayo. Espat topped the exam with a score of 386/400. Following behind her was AnnElyse Fleser - Perdue from La Isla Bonita Elementary School and Jasmine Faber from St. Peter Claver Primary School in Toledo.

Bernice York's Kai Badillo came in 7th, but opted not to give an interview and instead, in what might be a 7 News first, sent us his own personal statement. Badillo said "At first, I was in disbelief, but then slowly but surely I was convinced that it was true and not some form of joke. I would like to thank all my teachers, especially Mrs. Ali for putting in a lot of effort to ensure our success and my parents for providing the environment for me to succeed."

Hummingbird Elementary, Belize Elementary, St. Andrew Anglican and Bernice York received the top overall scores.
