On Friday we told you how Belize has formally started the countdown to the ICJ by submitting the Special Agreement to the Registrar of the Court. That happened on Friday, in the Hague, Netherlands. It now means that Guatemala will present its case, which is called a memorial within 1 year of Friday, June 7th, 2020. Belize will then have 1 year to respond.
Guatemala's Foreign Minister, Sandra Jovel was also at the ICJ on Friday to comply with Guatemala's requirements before the court. She also presented their Agent and the Coagent.
The agent is former Guatemalans Ambassador to Belize, Jorge Skinner-Klee and the Coagent, Ambassador Gladys Ruiz Sánchez de Vielman.
So now, both sides have formally acceded to the jurisdiction of the Court - and the procedure is - as they say - perfected - which means the look is running - and in one year we will know what portion of Belizean territory Guatemala truly claims.
