Victorious Guat Presidential Ticket Has Strong Belizean Family Ties
posted (June 17, 2019)
Presidential elections were held yesterday in Guatemala and a team with strong ties to Belize won the first round of voting. Sandra Torres - who is Narda Garcia's sister - got 25% of the vote, along with her Vice Presidential Candidate former Foreign Minister Carlos Raul Morales, who has a Belizean wife. They are the candidates for the National Unity of Hope, UNE party.

But that's just the first round of voting, now the top two candidates will have to square off in a runoff election in August. The challenge now for Torres - who is a center-left candidate - will be to fend off the candidates to the right of center - who will likely form an alliance against her.

Of the 8 million registered voters, 5 million came out to vote for the 19 presidential candidates - and a surprising 13% of the voters spoilt their ballots - in what as being seen as a sign of protest.

Torres is the ex wife of former President Alvaro Colom and, like Garcia, was born in Melchor.
