Alleged Drug Trafficker Who Ran From Mexico Gets Free in Bz
posted (June 20, 2019)
In January of 2018 - it caused an international incident when a Lincoln Navigator licensed in Belize - and found with 14 points of cocaine in a hidden compartment on the Mexican side of the northern border - busted away from the Mexican customs and raced towards Belize. Driver Robert Gentle, crashed into the customs fence at the northern border three weeks ago - but escaped the Mexicans.

And, now it seems the alleged drug trafficker has also escaped Belize law enforcement.

Earlier this week, the prosecution withdrew the case, due to a drop through somewhere in the process by the Prosecution Branch. It's a major embarrassment for police and the commissioner today said he has asked the professional standards branch to find out what went wrong:...

Chester Williams- Commissioner of Police
"The persons were charged. The matter was before the court and I was notified about a week ago that the matter was dismissed. And I made some inquiries as to why the matter was dismissed and I was told that it was due to lack of evidence. The prosecutor believed that he did not have enough evidence to proceed to trial. I am not going to condemn the prosecutor at this stage because I have directed that PSB investigate the matter to see whether or not there was sufficient evidence and to see if there was any justification for the actions done by the prosecutor. I have since also sent in a directive that when it comes to these major cases that the prosecutor cannot withdraw these matters without first consulting with Mr. Jones, who is our legal advisor or Ms. Alifa Elrington, who is the head of prosecution or the DPP Office."

AS it stands right now, 41 year old Robert Gentle - who pleaded not guilty - is free without a charge to answer.
