More Guilty Gangsters
posted (June 21, 2019)
Police have arrested and charged 3 more men for being in a gang. 2 of them are facing court fines for a guilty plea, and the third is on remand at the Belize Central Prison.

The defendants are 20 year-old Kevaughan Middleton, a resident of Caesar Ridge Road; 22 year-old Steven Palmer, a resident of Guerrero Street; and 22 year-old Edward Flowers Jr., a construction worker of Gill Street. Police say that they have been conducting surveillance on these 3 men since April of last year, and they are sure that they are members of the Southside Gangsters.

They were all arraigned in front of Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson today on the offense of being a member of a criminal gang. They all pleaded guilty to the offenses, but when the facts were read to them, Middleton changed his plea to guilty with an explanation. He said that he was only prepared to accept guilt because he knew that if he did not, he was going to be remanded to prison. He asserted that he was not a member of the SSG, and that he disagreed with the facts.

The other 2 men agreed with the police's evidence against them, and told the court that they have pictures on Facebook in which they are in the company of known gang members, and that they were displaying gang insignias.

The Senior Magistrate sentenced Palmer and Flowers to pay fines of $3,500 each by January 2020, and if they default in payment, they will spend 8 month in prison in default.

In Middleton's case, Senior Magistrate Pitts-Anderson explained to him that she cannot grant him bail in the first instance, but that he can retain an attorney and apply to the Supreme Court for bail. With that, she remanded him into custody until August 2nd, 2019.

Police say that the Southside Gangsters consists of 45 members that they know of.
