Bradley’s Got a Brand New Bag
posted (June 26, 2019)

The senate met today in Belmopan and former Belize City Mayor and former Caribbean Shores Standard Bearer, Darrell Bradley took his seat as the new president of the senate for the first time. He read his oath, gave a statement and he was warmly welcomed and congratulated by all the senators. Here is an excerpt from his opening address.

Hon. Darrell Bradley - Senate President
"Thank you for the privilege to serve as president of the senate. Know that I take up this post in humility, fully appreciating the solemnity of this office and the great importance of the legislature to a democratic process. I remember when I was a child; I use to watch proceedings of this national assembly broadcasted live on television. I was in awe of this assembly, having so much admiration and faith in the representatives and senators who spoke in this hollowed chamber. Now to be among you, elected to share these proceedings, this is indeed a singular honour that I’m ever grateful for. But as I am among you today, I know that I am not of you, the role of the president of the senate is limited to chair your proceedings, to ensure order and decorum for the smooth running of your affairs while you deliberate important matters of state. In so doing, I am duty bound to be this passionate, judicious, impartial and fair. But know what while I am only here to chair these proceedings; I still carry with me the same admiration and faith in you as I did when I was a child. The faith and hope that you do justice to the people that you represent, that you speak with integrity and wisdom and that you use this platform to champion the greatest aspirations of our people for better life."

Bradley takes the place of Lee Mark Chang - who stepped down to contest the Caribbean Shores convention.

Also taking up a full time seat in the senate today was Senior Counsel Michel Chebat.  He took his oath today as PUP senator in place of Eamon Courtenay - who stepped down to take up other duties for the PUP.
