Elderly Grocer Murdered, But "Dalla Kyte" Put Up A Fight
posted (June 27, 2019)
A well known Hattieville store owner Carlton Wade also known as "Dalla Kyte" was gunned down last night in a robbery. Two young robbers shot Wade and one of the bullets struck him in the head. But even that didn't stop Wade from fighting off his attackers so his common law wife and grandkids could get to safety. It really is a stunning story of adrenaline, will power, and heroism, but, sadly, also one of loss. Courtney Weatherburne has more.

Courtney Weatherburne reporting
If the gunshots were not enough, the blinding police lights surely got Hattieville residents out of their beds and

Unto to the street side near Kyte's store. They all looked on as police and scenes of crime personnel canvassed the area and secured store owner, Carlton Wade's body. The well-known resident better known as 'Dalla Kyte' was shot and killed inside his shop.

It happened around 9:00 last night, Wade was inside his store with his two grandchildren, one age 3, the other 9 when two gunmen pounced on him. Wade's common law wife was upstairs and was awakened by the gun blasts. This evening she told us the remarkable story of how Wade, with a gunshot wound to the head, fought off two robbers to save his family.

Louise Bailey, Wife
"Last night I was in my bed, and about after 8pm I heard like popshots and then after the second popshot, I heard my common-law husband hollered for me with a very loud voice and I jumped up because I was in a deep sleep. I jumped up and I peep down and I saw a hole in his forehead abd blood running on both sides and I told my baby who was with me that his father had gotten shot and he jumped up and I told him dont make any noise and then he looked up at me and then when I look down I saw my 3 year old granddaughter standing in front of the victim that got shot and then he gave me the eye to look behind the refridgerator where my other grandchild who is 9 years old was hiding and during his struggle when he was trying to give me directions to where the kids are, it was very hard for me. I look at him, I look at the kids, but in reality I havent seen any gunman. While I came down I didnt hear any talking. All I heard was gunshots from the outside. He was getting weak and I heard them slam the gate open and they were coming towards the shop where we were. He was trying to hold the door and within the struggle, one one of the gunman was trying to come in. I have seen any gunman. All I saw was the gun point pushing through the door and he was trying to hold the door. He just kept on holding the door so I could get the children upstairs. Up to this day people might wonder who is watching us, why hasnt she cried? But to be honest I cannot cry becaise of the natire of this crime. He was gundown in front of his two grandchildren. The two children right now is so devastated. We are going through so much. We have to get counseling for the 9 year old, because she cant take it. This morning my son broke down in tears, its a devastating situation. Although he was hurt, I could say through the Grace of God that he is a hero. He went down dying saving his children. It was not an easy fight for him to brace himself. I watched him pushed the door with the last little bit of strength. He put his hands up, because the baby that was in front of me, her whole head would have been shot off and I would have gotten shot in my stomach. The bullet entered his body and went through the other side. He is a hero going down for his family. He hasnt hurt anyone. He is a loving and kind person. Everyone knows Mr. Kite as the type of man that helps children, battered family. Him and I give those kids money for school, he gave them snacks for school."

But his kind acts and years of service to the community didn't stop two heartless robbers from killing him in cold blood. Our information is that, aside from blocking the door, Wade also hit one of the robbers with a tray when they finally got inside, but Wade fought all he could until he collapsed. The robbers then helped themselves.

Louise Bailey, Wife
"What I observed last, they took the land papers, they took the bank books that he have in his truck. They took his passport. They took his wallet with everything in there. I cannot say how much money, but I know it's a large amount of money. He have a business in Hattievile and at the market. What we do, we cater to the poorer class of people and we reached out to those who are in need and because of our business, he always have money and people knows."

The family also believes that the attackers are people known to them

Louise Bailey, Wife
"We have 4 dogs and if you touch the fence they will jump at you, so my concern that worries me, how come the gunman entered our yard without the dogs barking?"

But familiar or not, Bailey says she forgives them for executing her husband and is pleading for those wanting to seek revenge to stand down.

Louise Bailey, Wife
"Leave everything in God's hands, He is the only way. By getting revengeful doesn't make sense. I personally have forgiven those young men. The reason why I forgave them is because they are lost. They are looking for something that they cannot find and they need salvation. I am asking the public to pray for them and ask God to change their lives before they hurt somebody else."

Wade leaves behind 7 children and 4 grandkids.
