Season Shot Shane
posted (July 1, 2019)
Turning to news out of Independence Village now, 32 year-old Shane Bennett, a resident of Independence, is currently at the KHMH recovering from gunshot injuries he suffered after he allegedly pulled a pellet gun and threatened a man who had a licensed weapon. That man said he believed that Bennett was going to shoot him, and so he shot first.

It happened sometime before 8:00 yesterday morning. Officers found Bennett suffering from gunshot injuries to left arm, and his left hand. He said that he'd had a misunderstanding with 30 year-old Gabriel Sasone.

The cops say that he stopped cooperating with them, and so they tracked down Sasone who had showed up to the police station to report the incident. Sasone told police that he and Bennett had a heated misunderstanding, and Bennett allegedly threatened him. Sasone said that Bennett pulled out what appeared to be a black 9mm handgun, and believing that Bennett was about to make good on his threat, Sasone pulled out his licensed 9mm pistol and fired several shots at him, causing the injuries.

The officers went to the yard on Calabash Street where the shooting had occurred, and they found an air pellet gun, which they believe he pulled on Bennett.

Here's what police had to say about the case this afternoon:

ACP Joseph Myvett
"On Sunday sometime shortly before midday, police were called to an area in Independence Village where they observed one Shane Bennett with apparent gunshot injuries to his left arm. He was taken to the Independence polyclinic and treated where he was later transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. What the police know so far is that Bennett seemingly was in an altercation with another male individual where he pulled and pointed a firearm towards that person who likewise responded by pulling out his licensed firearm and fired several shots towards Bennett which caught him. That firearm and that person are now in the police custody pending this investigation. The police did go back somewhere in the vicinity of the scene where a search was conducted in an area where Bennett was and they found one black in colour pellet gun resembling that of a nine millimetre pistol with seven pellets."

Sasone remains in detention, and his licensed weapon is in police custody.
