posted (July 16, 2019)
Tonight, a Belize City man is clinging to life after he was shot in the head in downtown Belize City - and police are believed to have pulled the trigger.

It was reportedly the culmination of a dangerous, high speed chase through downtown which happened two hours ago. Here's more:

Jules Vasquez reporting
This was the frenzied scene at the foot of the swing bridge as police lifted Alysson Major Jr from his pickup into a police mobile as a throng of pedestrians looked on in stunned disbelief.

Best reports say that there had been a high speed chase - with police pursuing 36 year old Major

And it ended with him racing down Regent Street and crashing into this bus on the approach to the bridge.

He crashed after he was shot in the head - you can see where the bulett penetrated the pickup's rear window.

It was a scene of chaos that played out in the busiest part of the country's biggest population centre.

With shots firing in a high speed chase through downtown, near the commercial banks and Supreme Court - the danger to pedestrians and the public couldn't have been greater.

And, so it was for this teacher turned target.

At this hour, Allyson Major Jr is in surgery. He was shot to the head and is still breathing, but it doesn't look good.

Details are very preliminary, but we do know he was shot in the head, and eyewitnesses in the downtown area say the bullet came from police who were pursuing him. At this time we do not know what prompted the high speed chase.

More on this story tomorrow.
